Swimming in your pool is a great way to cool off and relax during the hot summer months, but did you realize all of the benefits that come along with swimming? It is a great way to keep fit and maintain your physical and mental health.

Exercising in the water gives you an advantage over exercising out of the water. The buoyancy of water in your pool takes the pressure off your joints, so there is no pounding or jarring when you hit the floor. About 90% of your body is buoyant when in the water and you’re able to move freely. The water has 12%-14% more resistance than when you exercise on land, plus it continuously cool your body while in your pool.

You can do more than just swimming laps in your in-ground pool:

  • Water aerobics: full body rhythmic exercises conducted in shallow and/or deep water and is designed to provide cardiovascular benefits
  • Deep water running: simulates land running but your feet don’t touch the bottom of the pool
  • Flexibility training: performing large movements using each body part’s full range of motion along with full body stretches

It strengthens the muscle along with making it more efficient in pumping, which leads to better blood flow throughout your body. Swimming also improves your flexibility and endurance along with asthma symptoms. The full body workout puts the body through a range of motion that helps joints and ligaments stay loose, and working out in moist air reduces exercise-induced asthma.

The mental health benefits are just as important as the physical ones. Swimming relieves stress and creates relaxation due to the release of feel-good chemicals called endorphins. The sound of your breathing and the rhythmic motions of swimming can help you drown out distractions. It can renew your energy, and if done in the morning, swimming will get you ready and focused for the rest of your day.
